Sand Point Information -
IMPORTANT PLEASE
READ
We have had a number of incidents (over 10)
before, during, after and since Inglewood that are quite concerning,
and quite frankly leave a not so friendly mark on District 2 and all
of WJGA. I’ll provide both a positive and negative recap and
additional information regarding Districts at Sand Point when the
tee times are posted later this week. If we have 10 bad incidents
prior to or on Monday at Sand Point, we will have a field that is
reduced by 10 on Tuesday (no exceptions).
Please do not call Sand Point.
This is a very busy time at Sand Point, and they are not allowing
any reciprocal rounds. As stated earlier there are no practice
rounds available, and you can’t go out unescorted and uninvited and
walk the golf course prior to the event. If
we determine that this is happening you will be DQ’d from the event
(no exceptions). Also no practice after your round at
Sand Point. Practice includes no use of the facilities (range,
putting green(s), chipping areas). I’m also adding juggling of golf
balls on your clubs and chipping and or swinging clubs in any area.
If you feel this will be difficult for you, I would suggest that
after you are done with attesting you take your clubs to the car. We
will have zero tolerance on this topic. This is not a request of
Sand Point’s it is based on our incidents at Inglewood.

District
Qualifiers….Important!!!
If you’ve qualified
for Districts you must get your entry and payment to me before I
leave Inglewood. If you’ve qualified and haven’t received a form, it
means you left before the awards ceremony. THIS IS YOUR
RESPONSIBILITY………… NOT MINE. Attached is a District Entry Form. Fill
it out and bring it with you and payment to Inglewood. If pace of
play is moving along at 4 ½ hours, I’ll try and post a list of
people who have or haven’t paid and maybe who I know have qualified
but don’t have an Entry Form.

INGLEWOOD TOURNAMENT INFORMATION
Please Please Please….Check
your volunteer duties…it is right next to your juniors tee time, just
like it has been for the past 10 years or so. If you can’t fulfill your
assignment, find a replacement. As a last resort tell Scott and I you
have a conflict. Next year when walking scorers don’t show up, their
junior will not be allowed to play.
District Entry Forms…I have
not checked Friday’s mail, and Saturday’s hasn’t shown up yet. Unless
you are not playing at Inglewood, don’t call or email me asking if I’ve
received your entry. There will be an up to date list (including
Saturday’s mail) at Inglewood….this list will show if your payment has
been received. If you aren’t on the paid list, and you want to play at
Sand Point I’ll need your payment before I leave Inglewood.
Does anybody read this stuff or anything else on
the WJGA website? It’s been the same info for what 12 years or so...in
fact as I've pointed out to the WJGA it's been 4 years or more since
I've been inside a bank...but I'm heading there with about 100 checks
for 75 dollars...on line payment coming soon to the wjga...see, even the
wjga home office is fair game for taking a shot or two.
Before I provide some information regarding Inglewood and possibly
Districts, am I allowed to congratulate Brian Mogg on his hole-in-one
even though it was in a tournament that conflicted with our event at
Snoqualmie Falls?....I didn't think so, and were we really in parkas at
Snoqualmie Falls?
Did anybody find any clubs at Carnation? We have a junior who believes
they may have left them at the Carnation Sub District.
Our last Sub District and we’re heading to Inglewood. We don’t often
get a chance to play a private club for a Sub District. Special note of
thanks to Ann and Dave Tillotson for helping us secure Inglewood for
this event. By the way Ann and Dave are on the short list to be the
future D2 Tournament Director and Co-Director……they’d be great wouldn’t
they?….the answer is YES.
I know I don't have to tell you what we need to do to help ensure we get
this type of opportunity again, but a good pace of play (surprise
surprise) is high on the list, as is taking care of the golf course and
leaving it at least the same way we found it…..if not better.
No practice facilities can be used after your round, remember proper
golf attire for everyone (walking scorers, helpers, spectators,
everyone). I’ll even try and get Spencer to get a haircut. He’s
approaching the WJGA guidelines with that mop,
Range balls will be provided.
We do not have access to the Club House.
Pace of Play: We will have a pace of play guideline and 4 timing
stations similar to what we've been doing. This will be covered at
staging.
I made another candy error at Snoqualmie and didn’t have it at both
scoring areas, and we ran out at #18. It wouldn't have been so bad if
the older kids didn't take four pieces each and you know who you are. I
think we need a candy volunteer/helper…anyone?….pretty simple job one
would think…now that’s me taking a shot at me. Seriously, how hard can
it be to buy two tubs of licorice?
District Entry Forms: Have you heard they need to be given to me with
payment before I leave Inglewood? You can also bring it by the Mexican
Restaurant (assuming it’s still there) that is up the hill outside of
Inglewood. Pretty good chance Scott and I will be there afterwards.
At registration and the scoreboard there will be a list of district
qualifiers who have and haven't paid-this will be current as of the
morning of our Inglewood event. Don't ask me (wink wink) if I've
received your entry/payment....check the list.....asking me means you'll
for sure be a walker and or helper on both days at Districts. Scott
wants you to ask.
Regarding Districts at Sand Point. Tee Times both days will start at
noon, which means the 9 holers will start around 4pm.
Finally, Inglewood the golf course and tees you’ll be playing. This is
an awesome golf course. Maybe a difficult walk for some, enough uneven
lies to get your attention, great shape, 5 Par 5’s and you start off
with back to back 5 pars (you don’t see that everyday), small fast
greens. For Mr. Foss....have you used your wedge for putting on greens
that are rolling at 12? I might have to come out and watch this.
Btw....Scott Babcock finally added some value the other day. I can say
this because I know he doesn’t read these messages. He noticed I had a
7-some (boys and girls) scheduled to tee off at the same time at
Inglewood (I’m guessing this would have been noticed on the web site).
For some reason he didn't buy my explanation that I wanted to test this
out with our Pace of Play procedure and if it worked we could have field
sizes of 300 next year. Maybe the Tillotson’s will want to experiment
with this.
9-holers will be playing the back nine and the Gold Tees.
14-17 Boys Blue Tees
12-13 Boys White Tees
12-13 Girls Gold Tees
14-17 Girls Combo (White and Gold) Tees….this will be explained at
Staging
See you Monday....and for Nathan Stephenson 8:00 AM is your tee time not
when you get up. We’ll see you bright and early at Inglewood. BTW……Mr.
Kern, Mr. Stephenson, Mr. Kleis, and Mr. Rudnicki you are now officially
on the clock. For Taffy and Randy this is Inglewood GCC in Kenmore WA,
not Inglewood CO.
Also, rumor has it that the Pace of Play procedure at Sand Point for
member play is 4:03. Thank goodness we’ll be in threesomes. Sand Point
has a clock on #5 and #13 tee, and it shows you where you are in
relation to a 4:03 round of golf….it’s not a rumor, it’s a fact.
Snoqualmie Falls & future tournament information
Information related to Snoqualmie
Falls, Inglewood and Districts.
We had 150 players at Carnation and we
teed off at 8:00.I think our last group finished at about 7:15. We have
150 players at Snoqualmie Falls and we tee off at 11:00. Do the math,
and you’ll understand why we need to play fast and keep up with the
group in front. There are no lights at Snoqualmie Falls. Below are the
Pace of Play Guidelines for Snoqualmie Falls.
At Snoqualmie Falls we
will be playing summer rules. Remember no range finders. Parents please
remember the spectator rules (25 yards). There is only one set of tees
at Snoqualmie Falls. On the par 5’s there are some forward tees that our
8-11 year olds will be playing and the 12-13 year old girls.
Volunteers….please show up on time. Walking scorers need to check in at
registration and be at staging with their assigned group.
There is a range at
Snoqualmie Falls. It’s not much of a range, and it is not owned by the
golf course. My guess is they will run out of balls assuming there are
any there to begin with. You’ve been warned.
Snoqualmie might have
mosquitoes, but they aren’t as big in size or number as Carnation.
Our next Sub District is
at Inglewood and Districts is at Sand Point. These are both private
courses, and the WJGA does not provide practice rounds. Please do not
call either of these courses to request a practice round. Again, please
do not call Inglewood and or Sand Point to request a practice round.
Remember if you qualify or have qualified for Districts, I need to
receive your entry from and payment prior to leaving Inglewood on the 12th.
With regards to the WJGA
scoring guidelines. After Snoqualmie Falls you will have played in up to
3 Sub District events. If your average score in the Sub District(s) that
you have played in is significantly over the scoring guidelines you will
be withdrawn from the Inglewood Sub District.
Pace of Play
Guidelines for Snoqualmie Falls:
It will be slightly
different from what we did at Carnation. At Snoqualmie Falls we will
still have 4 timing locations (Completing #4, #9, #13, and #18). At each
location the amount of time you are behind the group in front of you
will be timed. You need to be within 15 minutes of the group in front of
you. If your group is more than 15 minutes behind the penalties will be
the same as Carnation: 1st offense-warning, 2nd
offense-1 shot penalty for each player in the group, 3rd
offense-2 shot penalty for each player in the group, and 4th
offense-DQ for the entire group.
A group can also be
warned and or penalized if you fall behind at other points on the golf
course.
Your group will not be
warned or penalized if you are on pace to play in 4 ½ hours or less (2 ½
for those playing 9 holes)
Players can also be
warned and or penalized if they take more than 40 seconds to play a
shot.
Note, we did not have
one group at Carnation receive a warning or penalty for slow play.
See you Monday….the
first day of summer I hope
wow,
wow,
wow….It
wasn’t 5 hours, it wasn’t 4 ¾, it almost wasn’t even 4 ½ hours. What
that was is the way it should always be. That’s the goal, and now we
know how to do it. A really big Thank You to Carnation Golf Course.
Aside from the mosquitoes which might have had something to do with
keeping us moving, they gave us enough tee times to make what was 4-4 ½
hour rounds a reality.
Some
Highlights:
· Every
8-11 year old group played in less than 2 hours and 10 minutes, and did
you see some of those scores? 43 in the Boys 8-11 doesn’t even qualify
for Districts, that is what I call a strong field. I think it also
validates that most of us play better when we aren’t playing 9 holes in
3 hours.
· Our
first group off the 1st Tee (a foursome) played in just over
4 hours……get ready for this…..our 17th group off the 1st
tee was a foursome and they played the front nine in two hours and
finished in 4 hours and 5 minutes. I think our 17th group at
Jackson Park was sitting on the 3rd tee after 2 hours. Also,
in this 17th group at Carnation the lowest score of the day
(68) was shot.
· Our
last group of the day played in 4 hours 33 minutes. WOW!
· We
heard from a handful of our long time experienced players who said that
was the quickest Sub District they have every played, and a lot of
players commented that they also had a time or two during the round when
they waited for a 5-10 minute period. I bring this up because it shows
that when we do fall behind and it will happen, we can catch up. It
happened during the day and it was awesome to see the players make the
effort to catch up.
We’ll
continue to try and set things up (without the mosquitoes) to help make
4 ½ hour rounds possible. Yes, I said 4 ½ that is what the timing
stations at Snoqualmie Falls will be measuring……Just kidding.
I’m not
sure we’ll be able to replicate what happened yesterday, but as I said
earlier we now know it can be done and we know what is required.
Again,
great job yesterday. One last note on pace of play. Even if your group
is playing in 3 ½ hours and or keeping up with the group in front of
you, each player is expected to play their shot when it is their turn to
play within 40 seconds.
Now for
the not so good/positive news. We had a number of volunteers and
walking scorers show up late or not at all……not good…..this makes Scott
and I very grumpy. We don’t want to require 2 walking scorers per group
(other sub districts do this). They do it to help avoid slow play not to
allow half of the walker to not show up. What we might think about doing
is having the same rule for a player not showing up apply to a
volunteer/walking scorer……if you don’t show up your junior can’t
participate in his or her next scheduled event. This idea isn’t just
coming from Scott and I, but from our volunteers who really make these
events possible. We can’t do it without you, and thanks for all your
help yesterday and going forward. We’ll see you at Snoqualmie Falls,
not TPC Snoqualmie, Snoqualmie Falls just down the road from Carnation.
Not Snohomish…..that is a whole other story.

NEWS from
your DIRECTORS,
Dear Players and Parents,
Based on the speed at which District 2 filled up this year, I think it’s safe to
say everyone is ready for the 2010 WJGA season.
Does
anybody know how to get a hold of Janet Benson or Nancy Frost? They aren’t
returning any of my calls and they always returned them last year when I was in
the director in training role. Just kidding, and seriously a special thank you
to both Janet and Nancy for all of the work they put in over the years.
As
many of you are aware this is my first year as your District 2 director, and
Scott Babcock our co-director is also in his first year. Both Scott and I are
looking forward to working with and watching all of the kids enjoy this great
program. This program can’t be run without the parents and volunteers, and as
always we will be relying on many of you to help ensure that our tournaments run
as smoothly as possible. Remember this is our first year so Scott and I will not
only be looking for your help but your patience as well.
We
are just starting to look at pairings for our sub district events, and many of
you are aware that we have a wait list for each event. Please let us know (ASAP)
if you are aware of a conflict and know that you will need to withdraw from a
tournament. That said also remember that in case of a withdrawl
you
MUST let me know at least 48 hours in advance.
Failure to do so will result in your child being ineligible for the next
scheduled tournament. No-shows have an adverse affect on the entire field, so
this rule will be strictly enforced. Also, please see the new and improved WJGA
website for spectator rules, dress code and the above mentioned tournament
withdrawl information.
We’ve also been asked about what tees we will be playing. As we get closer to
the events, I will be providing updates but the following information should
prove helpful. First, at Jackson Park we will be starting on #10 and the 8-11
year olds will be playing what is normally the back nine. At this point I
believe the 8-11 year olds will be playing the front 9 at the other courses.
This
is subject to chance but assuming our courses have 3 sets of tees (blue, white
and red) we will be using the following.
Boys
14-17 Blue, Boys 12-13 White, Girls 14-17 White, Girls 12-13 Red, 8-11 Girls and
Boys Red.
Here’s to hitting it long and straight, making a lot of putts and most
importantly playing fast…..see you soon.
